The short answer

Choose around delivery. Loom offers a hosted video-message workflow. LumaTake is a beta Mac studio with local recording, timeline editing, captions, and file export. It does not replace Loom’s hosted library or review links, and it is not marketed as a free-plan equivalent.

Check whether a plan limit is the actual problem

Atlassian currently documents a five-minute recording limit and a 25-video library limit for Loom Starter. Paid tiers have different allowances. Read Loom’s current recording limits. Do not assume a limit you see in one workspace applies to every plan.

If you already pay for Loom but still hit five minutes, verify the active account, workspace, and role before changing tools. Atlassian provides a workspace and subscription check for that situation.

LumaTake uses local media rather than a hosted video-count allowance. That does not make storage or recording duration physically unlimited: available disk space, hardware, and app access still matter.

A hosted link and a local file solve different jobs

Loom download access depends on the plan and role. Its documentation also identifies web features that do not carry into the downloaded MP4. Check Loom’s download rules before assuming the downloaded file will match the complete web viewing experience.

LumaTake’s export workflow produces a local file. You choose the destination for that file, and you can keep the editable project for later revisions. This is useful for course uploads, a product video, or a handoff that requires video and subtitle files.

If your colleagues mainly need a quick link, viewer interaction, and a shared hosted library, local export adds another delivery step. That tradeoff can be a reason to keep Loom.

Compare the work after the recording

Which workflow fits?
Your priorityWhat to evaluate
Send a quick update to teammatesHosted sharing and the way your team watches and responds.
Publish an edited tutorialTimeline cuts, readable zooms, captions, and destination-ready exports.
Keep source media locallyWhere originals and projects are stored and how they are backed up.
Deliver subtitles separatelySRT/VTT export and the receiving platform’s requirements.
Move between computersAccount, purchase, project, and file-transfer requirements.

Move the deliverable, not an assumption about the project

Keep access to the original library while checking what can be downloaded under your plan. Download an authorized sample and inspect its audio, edits, and captions. Do not assume the hosted version’s interactive elements are embedded in a video file.

For new recordings, compare a short LumaTake screencast workflow with your current process. Include the time required to upload or share the final file, rather than stopping the comparison at the record button.

Questions about this workflow

Will LumaTake give me a hosted share link?

No hosted review-link service is included in the current local workflow. Export the file and choose where to share it.

Does LumaTake have Loom’s Starter limits?

It uses local files rather than Loom’s hosted Starter library. It still requires the applicable app access and enough local storage. This is not a promise of a free unlimited service.

Should I switch because a paid Loom account still stops at five minutes?

First check the workspace and role in the recorder. The wrong active workspace can apply Starter limits even if another workspace has a paid subscription.
